In [[The Whole-Brain Child]] a twelve-year-old girl by the name Amanda had a fight with her best friend. The argument was extremely painful for Amanda, but Amanda acted as though she did not care about anything " I don't really care if we never talk again. She annoys me anyway "
Amanda was essentially dealing with a painful rejection but her solution was to retreat to the left side of her brain, specifically to an emotional desert.
The author argues that he had to connect with Amanda's right brain by acknowledging her pain and attuning to her real feelings gently. The author highlights that it is important not to point out abruptly that Amanda was hiding from herself but to instead try to empathize with Amanda. The goal was to make Amanda feel felt, to know that she was not alone.
Once the author had established connection with Amanda then the conversation would flow more naturally and it allowed Amanda to open and talk about her true feelings. The author encouraged Amanda to tell her story and asked her to pause so she could acknoacknowledge her feelings.
The result was that Amanda was using her left brain to tell her story, while her memories her feelings were coming from her right brain, thus connecting her left brain with her right brain.
